In Your Hands

We would love you to be part of a 14-day hands journal either as an individual or as a group. A selection of activities to create a journal made by you of creative, connective, fun things to do about hands and the stories they tell, recording what hands mean to us together and for us personally.

💜 There’s no start date, you don’t have to do it in an order, and you don’t have to do all of it, you can update/share with us as you go, will be doing it too.

Day 1 “The hand expresses what the heart already knows” Samuel Mockbee.  

Write, paint, draw onto your hands as many messages of love, hope, and connection as you can fit – take photo’s / videos, make collages. Do this as many times as you like. 

Extra for the ❤️- Write up, draw up, take photos of your hands and, display them somewhere you feel safe, everyday remind yourself of them, let them be in your heart. You could always share them with other people you miss right now.

Day 2 “One hand I extend into myself, the other towards others”

Write a “hand poem”, or a ‘poem about hands’. You could write your poem in a hand, or around a hand.

Extra for the ❤️- Record your hand poem, play it out loud. Listen to yourself. Maybe share it with others, it’s good to share a bit. Read other people’s poems about hands. Read out loud even to yourself. 

Day 3 “It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it” Nelson Mandela

Try something new with your hands, and tell us about it in words, pictures, photos, videos, symbols. You can show us more than one new thing you try with your hands. 

Extra for the ❤️- Draw around your hand and then inside the hand draw, colour, write, the world you’d like to see. Send a copy or an original of this hand, and the world you’d like to see to all the people you love. 

Day 4 “Hands have their own language” Simon Van Booy

Choreograph a piece with your hands to ‘one love’, it can be hand symbols, sign language, dancing with fingers, movement of hands. It can be just a verse, chorus or the whole song.  Video this to send us, and we will make a collective piece.

Extra for the ❤️- make a list of all the many ways you use your hands to express yourself, negatively or positively, and then think about how you could make the most of the positive. Do more hand dancing, it’s good for the soul. We welcome all hand dancing photos, and videos. 

Day 5 “You can’t shake hands with a closed fist” Mahatma Gandhi

Make shapes and shadows with your hands, you can keep it simple, or go for a full-on puppet show. Everything goes as long, as it’s your hands and its shapes and shadows. We want photos and videos, sketches, paintings, drawings. 

Extra for the heart ❤️- Look at your hands, other people’s hands, put them in the light, put them in the dark, make shapes, watch the shapes other’s make with their hands. Sketch, draw, paint, cut out and make collages of these shapes. Enjoy the shapes, and the stories they tell.

Day 6 “Now join your hands, and with your hands your hearts” William Shakespeare

Create a Heart shape with your hands and then frame things you love, as many and as often as you like, and send us all the photos or videos.  

Extra for the ❤️- Draw a series of hearts and in them put all the things, people you love.  Decorate a wall/window so during this time, every day, you can be reminded of the things and people you love. 

Day 7 “The hand is the tool of tools” Aristottle

Experiment, and collect up hand sounds- clicks claps, flicks, finger drumming, whistling…. All of it. Send us videos, or audio clips. 

Extra for the ❤️- write a list of all the things you use your hands for, stick it up somewhere, or keep it somewhere you can access, and take 5 minutes just to sit and be grateful, for all your hands do for you. 

Day 8 “The hand is the cutting edge of the mind” Jacob Bionowski

Find as many ways of capturing light onto your hands, or through your hands, take photos, or videos to send us. And share with others. 

Extra for the ❤️- Think about the things that are dark right now, and write it or draw a list, and then next to them write the things that are light. Try to find at least one light thing to every dark. If you can’t, then keep the dark there, and add extra light to something else on the list. It doesn’t always quite balance out but acknowledging it all is a start. Share your lists with us please. 

Day 9 “When you really think about your hand, you begin to realise it’s connection to sense the hum of your own being passing through it. When we look at a piece of the universe we should feel the same” Emily Carr

Make as many different pictures, photos, videos, paintings, collages using other materials to make hand shapes, or use lots of hands to make other shapes. Take photos or videos, write about what you do… send us it all.

Extra for the ❤️- Write letters to those you wish you had but haven’t. Send the quote for day 9, handwritten to as many people as you can, in as many ways as you can. 

Day 10 “When you put your hand in a flowing stream, you touch the last that has gone before and the first of what is still to come” Leonardo da Vinci

Draw around your hands, and then in them write us stories of your hands.  This can be as many stories as you wish to tell, send them to us as originals, photos, or videos. 

Extra for the ❤️- Read the stories out loud, record them if you can. Write the stories up and send them to people you love. Sometimes we don’t know what to say in a letter, how to start a conversation – send them a bit of info of what you are doing, and a copy of the story…handwritten love. 

Day 11 “The burned hand teaches best” J.R.R.Tolkein

Using recycled paper, only create all kinds of things by folding paper. Send us photos and videos of your hands folding paper, and your creations.

Extra for the ❤️- write, or draw as many memories of being taught things you use your hands for… can you remember learning to do certain things with your hands? Send us all those memories in any way you like. 

Day 12 “Love is a fruit in season at all times, and within reach of every hand” Mother Teresa

Write or make a visual diary/journal entry from the perspective of your hands. Do this for a 24-hour period. 

Extra for the ❤️-. Using your hands send love to as many people as possible, in ways that respect social distancing and guidance.  Tell us about this. 

Day 13 “Condemn none: if you can stretch out a helping hand, do so. If you cannot, fold your hands, bless your brothers, and let them go their own way” Swami Vivekananda.

Tell us a memory you have of someone else’s hands, it can be in any form you like. Writing, drawing, painting, audio. You can give us as many memories/stories of hands as you think of. 

Extra for the heart ❤️- think, write, draw, create as many versions of hands connecting as possible without physical touch … can you feel a person touch your hand If you think about it enough? Tell us about it all…. 

Day 14 “I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands, you need to be able to throw something back” Maya Angelou.

Make hand prints/fingertip prints, prints of all parts of your hands to capture all the details, the lines, the scars… add them in, tell us about them. 

Extra for the ❤️- Each day look at your hand, take time to really look at what it says to you, if interested research palmistry, share with us your findings. Have you ever had your palm read, tell us about it, do you know someone else who had their palm read?
